i knew that was coming... and i know it's not true. i was on the WAR core tester team, i still talk to some of the guys at mythic, and i know the lament they face with what they want to achieve vs what they're told to develop. but that still shows part of the core problem: the people making the real decisions were/are out…
I personally just don't get where all the MMO fever is coming from. It's being demonstrated time-and-time again that it's just not profitable to try and break into that market, but every year, loads of attempts materialise - and usually collapse not long thereafter.
But of course the work that still falls under an NDA can't be shown, and I would assume that people regularly update their portfolio ...don't laugh yet.... ...because I know artists at their core are so focused that they are lazy...:)
smaller studios usually are a more 'family' environment. When Terminal Reality had their layoffs a month ago, they gave people a week to come in and back all their work up. They also gave them deals on licensing their engine for free.
The 'fever' comes from greed. They look at WoW and think that they can grab a marketshare, but it fails because Blizzard did it right and took their time getting it right. Will there be another game that can match the accomplishments of WoW? Probably, but it won't happen over night. It will be an IP that took years to…
:( We did have to come in to work for two weeks or so. That was a pretty surreal time, everyone was backing stuff up like crazy and working on their portfolios. I'd imagine this would differ a lot from country to country. USA seems to have almost no protection for employees.
i dumped my stock in ea earlier this year. There business plan is finally catching up with them, people are just angry so they say stupid stuff about being happy they are laying off people. I doubt they are truly happy about it when it comes to the person loosing their job but they are happy that ea is strugglnig
They just pay you for the month/fortnight Seirei and let you go on the spot. And honestly i don't see how to do it otherwise? if you know your being laid off it would be pretty uncomfortable coming in after that point, especially if it wasn't the whole office being let go.
crap, how everybody is backing up their work and scouting for some new work. Such a harsh industry =/. I've had friends who had been on 1 week vacations coming back to the office and noticed that they were the only ones there, then when they realized what happened they got escorted out by security. It's scary.
