Kinda off topic but Im hoping that they are combining virtual texturing and regular texture streaming for doom4 and the next engine. In a game like doom4 with rooms and hallways you probably dont need unique textures on 90% of stuff, but in some cases it could really help. You could just select a few man made objects where… -

RexM I think you're a little misguided and misinformed by what this "unlimited" type of lingo is.. Just because you're only bound the the amount of renderable pixels on the screen, it doesn't mean that you don't have to worry about video memory. I've re-read John Olick's presentation, here's a few bits of info: A single voxel requires 8 bytes of data, RGB XYZ (normal) Spec intensity + 1 byte for the data structure itself. Rage was 3 DVDs with heavy compression and got lots of gamer criticism for world texture resolution. Also, I'm familiar with LIDAR scanning, we've tested it, and I'm not sure if it's even possible to build a complete interior with the tech. The LBP guy was talking about graphics programming in general, from his who knows how many years of experience combined with the entire company's experience.
