Stop using any smoothing on your characters. The only time you ever need to smooth like that is for sculpting in zbrush, not for this. Anything hard surface you can mesh smooth but not the characters body at all. if your low poly does not smooth well, then its your fault and you can't try and cover it up with smoothing.

I honestly think you should go back to the most basic form of modeling, no smoothing, no characters, and just get a feel for form and topology. Once you got that down, move to hard surface with supporting edges, once you have that down youll view characters differently. I get mad as hell when I see someone who can do stuff…
