yeah copying through the camera is terrible. My CF got corrupted last time (my fault I guess, cheap knockoff CF), and I couldn't even read it anymore through the camera, came up as blank. When I used a reader I managed to save 95% of the pictures I took.
my pentax uses SD, too. there seems to be an issue with CF cards potentially damaging the pins in the camera if you're not careful, making for a rather expensive repair. certainly happened to some canon owners i know. anyway, size comparisons are fun. lumix vs some canon SLR:…
The s90 and s95 are great pocket cameras. You can get a DSLR BODY for around that price, but try to replicate the lens range and speed of the s90 and you're looking at double if not triple the price. A 28mm equivalent f/2 is gonna set you back at least 300-600 dollars for a crop body camera. I shot with an s90 alongside a…
What you can get for $628 USD used off of ebay, I know you'de pay more in shipping + VAT or whatever, but still: Canon EF 28mm 2.8 $180 - wide http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/Canon-EF-28mm-f-2.8-Lens-Review.aspx Canon EF 50mm 1.8 $70-80, or $100 new - normal http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-f18.htm…
The reasons to buy full frame (ignoring the fact that most full frame bodies have superior metering, viewfinders, and auto focus and weather sealing) is to get the lens range to "act" properly. The 35mm L has no peer on a crop on any format. Only the Leica 35s on an M9 touch it, albeit without autofocus. Same with the 50mm…
Shaffer, I was about to say just go to B&H and buy the 50mmm 1.8 new, but the price has jumped up for $95 when I bought it to $120. Sons of bitches. This sells for $80-120 used, so maybe $120 new isnt a bad price, its such a cheap(price and build quality) lens that I would rather just buy it new myself. However, here is a…
Got a PM from sampson asking about P&S cameras, which is fair game for this thread. And my response: Hey, first off, feel free to post in the camera thread, it doesnt have to be strictly SLR advice. Now saying that, my first instinct when hearing someone is willing the shell out $400 for a P&S is: BUY AN SLR!! You'll spend…
Out of those choices I would have to recommend the NEX-5, however it isn;t really that compact when you throw a lens on it. So at that point, you're probably better off with just a standard size SLR. But the Lumix GF1/2, Olympus EP1/2, Sony NEX-3/5 are all very capable cameras that can deliver excellent results, even…
---Sorry, didn't see your response here until now. Yeah of course, though there isn't too much to argue about, if we use M43rds as a baseline and assume current generation sensors: APS-C gives 2/3rds stop narrower DOF at the same aperture and equiv focal length and about 2/3rds stop better high ISO noise and dynamic range…
I was more talking about specific styles/types, so like: Sports? Weddings? Portraits? Landscapes? Cityscapes? Interiors? Low light bars/clubs with friends? Low light exterior/nightscapes? Pets/birds? Vacation snapshots in daylight? Long exposures, for waterfalls etc? The specific sort of things you want to do will tend to…
