If it's the lowpoly model, smooth works fine with edges on, remember to turn on "draw all edges" in edit mode too, so it doesn't skip out on any. highpoly is the same, there's an option in there to show the controlmesh edges on the subsurfed endresult too, the small circular button in the modifier will apply the subsurfed…
