if faces are of the same smoothing group, try to connect them. if not, they must be separated. Poly's at angles that are 80 adn bellow shouldnt be of the same smoothing group. this rule is very general, so it doent apply as well in other area. chamfering key edges helps if you want to make the the same smoothing group.…
