Hey all, I'm currently working on the second version of 3dCodex.com. Basically this is meant to be "the finest source of 3d graphics tutorials in the world." I'd love to hear what people think of when they imagine the perfect place to find 3d tutorials. With the new system being built in ASP.net, the odds are if you can…
the filtering looks in my opinion to complicated make it easier (not more than 7 options to click) the " perfect place to find 3d tutorials" would be a place where one person or a group of persons have made a "standard" for their tutorials and also they would make their own tutorials. like the guys on…
Since you are looking to build a robust tutorial database, it might be nice to have your normal tag cloud style navigation but also offer linear paths people can follow that consist of several tutorials that relate to one another. If you come to the site looking for something specific, like how to edit camera settings in…
All of my experience comes from programming, but based on the best tutorial sites I have been to, they all have one thing in common, which is their strength, but after a time its also their weakness. They have great simple tutorials that teach a single concept, and do it well. But the thing I see people mess up all the…
What I like about cgtuts+ that I don't see on your layout is a mini description of what the tutorial is that I'm clicking on. I like that on cgtuts+ because I can decide if I want to click through the tutorial or not which saves me waiting for a page to load. With your design from the last couple of shots looks like i have…
@Uneditablepoly: Would it be fair to say that you hate tutorial sites because that's exactly what they are? Just one-shot sites that someone built by crapping out bad HTML five or ten years ago and stacking up adverts until it almost becomes unusable? That's what we're here to fix. Any more clarity you can provide would…
I have never been a fan of the tutorial database sites when they are set out like that, they always confuse me. Id say simplicity is key, id want to jump on here and instantly be able to feel at home and search for some tutorials. Whenever i look for them, im always flicking through sites, based on how easy t hey look.
Thanks for the replies everyone! It makes a big difference to get your feedback, and every round makes this that much better. Currently on the bus, so I'll have to post more later. @Sean: Can do. It'll be up in the next revision this evening. @CMan: Let me reflect that back to make sure I understand... + Tighten up the…
@Valoo: I'm trying to understand what you mean, but some clarification would help. You're saying that it's a good idea to have a lot of small and concentrated tutorials (i.e. "understanding the performance of indoor volumetric lighting") but at the same time, some structure to help people connect that to, say, outdoor…
@jocose: Thanks for the input! Totally- I'm really looking forward to how robust this can get. For example, someday I'd like for people to create lesson plans that they can link back to and post on blogs or forums. I.E. Someone asks "How do I get better at modeling" then you can reply with "Do these tutorials I've picked…
