I think the easiest way to render the wireframe is using the 3D viewport with *Viewport Overlays* set to wireframe and *Viewport Shading* set to rendered.. and then directly using *View -> Viewport Render Image*.. and for a more subdivided wireframe.. just apply as many levels as you want..
There was a color wireframe patch not long ago and it was shot down by the head of the blender foundation. He didnt believe in color wireframes, at least initially. It might be awhile before something similar gets put into blender.

@kio - my bad, it's an addon conflict with something over here. what i noticed though is that if the mesh already has wireframe display activated before selection then that wireframe gets cleared after deselection. is that the same behaviour on your end by any chance?
Blender doesn't appear to be able to select only a portion of a face in wireframe mode, in this case you have to switch to solid. Also, you are trying to select only visible elements, so, wireframe mode is not really the mode you want to be on while doing that.
