I thinks its more of people learning how to better utilized the hardware we have. Cry Engine 3 for the consoles looks amazing, Xbox 360's average launch title
When I compare games of similar genres, such as Q3 to UT3, I do see a pretty signifigant advancement in engine technology. It's not as drastic as say the gap betwee Wolf3D and Q3, but it's large nonetheless.
I can see where you're coming from. There probably is a certain degree of stagnation in terms of utilizing the power at hand. A lot of the focus has gone into texturing and shading. And there have been considerable strides in those areas, to be sure. But features like AI, animation systems, and gameplay have taken a back…
I remember Quake 3 when it was released and one of its defining features was its use of of curves, "my god its full of curves". I agree about the facial animation, its crazy that we still see games with wooden marionettes, like in Dragon Age for instance, when the source engine has almost perfected it years before. I guess…
Graphics Engines are hugely powerful now, and it's not just the artists that can't keep up, but the TOOLS. We are getting some great tools come about these days, but it's taken a lot of years to get there. Oh, and where's my cheap cloth sim and hair tech? I'm tired of video game characters who are bald and wear only skin…
Trying to please everyone will always hurt large parts. The day valve will announce the new source engine and its games to come out on consoles and the pc at the same time will be the time i jump infront of a train. Assasins creed press x 20 times and your flinging up this 100 story builduing gameplay just doesnt do it for…
Here is the question to see if technology has advanced in the last 10 years. Could you remake any of the latest games in just the quake3 engine? I could see most of the stuff in Modern Warfare 2 being made 10 years ago. There are some things that may have to be carefully implemented but I'm sure it could be done. You know,…
Valve still uses "Worldcraft" for level design. I started using it for Half-Life 1 but I'm pretty sure it was designed for Quake 1. It gets the job done, but in regards to putting the proper tools into the proper hands, this is a huge issue. I wouldn't be surprised if the next engine from Valve still used Hammer and…
Yesterday marked a decade of Quake 3 and, while that game did a lot to peoples futures, looking back at the past I started to think about what I thought games would be like around this time, today. When Quake 3 hit the scene it did a lot for polygonal engines and, being young, it would often muster up thoughts of what…
