Opps probably should have quoted this Neil doesn't have an object painter script for Maya, there are object painter scripts out there, but the only one Neil has done is for 3dsmax. Everything else was fine =)
If this is for offline rendering then Proxies are definately the way to go (i would recommend Vray proxies). We have had tens of billions of polygons in max using proxies. Mostly foliage. If you can keep the variety of foliage down to say 4/5 different types of tree or leaf etc then that will help with render times. 6000…
I may switch to geo objects instead of alpha planes if I can't get decent render times in Maya or can't learn the CE3 in the span of two or three weeks.
