Ive always used max, and if you stay ignorant of the other programs you can be pretty happy, my problem is my boyfriend uses maya and he always comes up behind me and says things like "you know in maya you can do that in like one step right?" and then I'm like why can't they put that awesome tool into max too. So yeah…
Does Maya have an inset function? I can't seem to find anything like Max or XSI's inset. Also, is there a way to tweak points along the surface normal?
Connect and constrain to edge are basically my two most used tools in Max, and I cannot get into Maya no matter what other pros it might have over max. If I could just get functional versions of those two tools that have been in every 50 dollar russian-made program since 1992, I'd be a happy man.
I feel like I can anticipate one of the new tools in IC.Shape 2.0. Anything to see a girl smile. From MAXScript menu, create a New Script. Copy and paste following code, then from editor menu Tools choose Evaluate All. You'll find the command in Customize User Interface... under category IllusionCatalyst Tools, named…
I think Firecracker197 meant in maya the separate function will automatically separate meshes that aren't connected from each other (aka floating geo that's in one mesh). I don't think there's a short cut in XSI to do it, but I normally just select a piece of the mesh I want to separate, "SHIFT"+"+" to expand my selection…
While "chamfer" is just "bevel" in Maya, it's true that Maya by default doesn't have a "Connect" function like Max (which is context sensitive and incredibly useful). It's like a faster version of the Split Polygon tool. However Maya also has "insert Edge Loop" which Max doesn't have out of the box AFAIK. Both useful in…
Select two parallel edges and click connect. There is a small box next to the button with a few expanded features. Polyboost/graphite modeling tools has an really nice feature called swift loop. You can do that, or extrude the arm from the body. A quick way to do this would be to make a n-gon 5-6-8 sided poly and using the…
I'm making the transition to Max rather easily actually. One thing that bothers me though, is having to actually click in the viewport to activate it in order to zoom to full screen. Is there script or way around this besides that switcher program listed a few pages back that will allow me to alt+w fullscreen a viewport…
OK so to answer everyone's questions about what I meant, usually in Max I just group all my objects together, instead of having them all part of one mesh, but sometimes I run into the problem of needing them to be all in one mesh, and then for whatever reason I want to break them up again into different pieces. In maya…
Okay, I see what you mean by this. I don't actually use Maya but was assuming people clumped the functionality of XSI and Maya as the same thing. XSI's version of this does everything you described in max minus the "stops when it meets another set of edges" that Sage mentioned, which I just tried in Max. I don't really see…
