Edge constrain. You hold C while moving verts and it constrains the edges to move along edges. I'm not sure if this works with soft select or not. Don't have Maya open to check.

Constrain to edge is it in max, and every vertex moves along it's own edges, and you don't have to have an entire ring selected like in NEX to get it to work.
