   Is there any way to insert a vertex in an edge where the edge intersects with another face/edge in the same object? Thanks

   There are a few ways, easiest is Editable Poly > Edge > Cut.

   Uh, isn't this just a Boolean intersection, or at least you could use it in a series of steps to get exactly what you want... However, Vig is right we need more info.
