I think your broadway analogy falls apart. Criticizing an entire genre like musicals would be more like attacking a whole genre of games, like FPSes. No, it's merely fitting. It's by no means a good plot, it's just a very generic vehicle for guns and explosions and general machismo. That doesn't make it a bad plot... it just doesn't make it great.
