   in customize > preferences under Gizmos tab theres a transform gizmo "on" check box see if it's un-ticked by chance. or try executing this in the script editor, which does the same thing..:) max showaxisicon

   Hehe at first I would say LUCKY YOU! Because gizmoless transformation is indeed kindof cool. For organics it is extremely useful, someone made me a script for that a long time ago (switching to screen mode at the same time) and I still use it today. Anyways.
