Add a STL Check modifier above the Editable Poly base, as well as a Edit Poly modifier above the STL Check -> rightlclick Edit Poly modifier -> "Collapse to". Should fix the problem and is easier than deleting and creating faces ;)
If you want to remove edges / optimize a model without breaking your UVs it s easy. I think this thread would benefit from examples of using sub-d specific, or common modifiers and the pitfalls within using those modifiers. the FFD's and path deform WSM modifiers i believe are pretty common when dealing with sub-d i think.
