I'd have to agree that baking spec is pretty useless, unless you're baking a procedural mask, or varied color to a UV jumble. Its easier to just paint spec from scratch or by manipulating the diffuse.
Just to make sure everybody is a little more confused: you can bake reflection occlusion. it's pretty similar to ambient occlusion, but instead of weighting the occlusion samples based on the normal (and a cosine distribution) it uses the reflection vector.
