You can also use UVed and displaced geometry in Zbrush as a base then dynamesh and clean up afterward to avoid sculpting everything (although for a hero prop you'd probably end up sculpting over everything anyway...)
it's not old school/ It's one of the key zbrush feature . Hugely superior than ID animated brushes in SPainter doing true alpha cure deform along the stroke .
