Thanks @poopipe . yeah I like maya a lot most of the time but every once in awhile there is just like a week it decides to shit the bed repeatedly. is it correct to say that version control is useful only for the .ma files because you can compare the text? Like if you versioned .mb files, the only thing that does is allow…
we always use MA at the office because of precisely this crap - you can often just cut the bit you don't like out of the file in a text editor and be on your merry way. The two lessons to learn here are.. 1:never trust maya and 2: use version control.
if you're happy with git then keep using it. it would be worth trying perforce out just in case you like it but I wouldn't migrate a project I was halfway through because it's a huge ballache if you want to retain revision history. You can't merge binaries with perforce by default - you need specific plugins for that (like…
Could not find any way to recover that work. Not 100% positive the exact cause, but a good hunch that because I left mash network in the scene (didn't delete it after being finished with it) that was the source of the problem. To mitigate lost time, decreasing auto save interval. One problem though is that incremental…
Perhaps I should post this in the building PC thread, but can anybody say anything about this RAID device? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Y924XRD It was recommended from Puget Systems which is where I got my desktop from. This is two hard drives which I understand would allow you to do a Raid 0 or Raid 1 type of setup. Raid…
yes, you'd not be able to read binaries so you'd only be able to roll back (technically you'd could try to remove bits manually with a hex editor but good luck with that) I put anything that contributes to a project and that can't be recreated in a short time into version control. eg. my substance designer files go into…
Hey I've just had a very similar issue, but I was fortunately saving with .ma not binary. I'd just had a mistype and changed a mash network from 600 dist to 600450 (instead of down to 450), so the PC tried to go to into space whenever it loaded and Fatal Errored. I was able to recover the file by opening it in a text…
Thanks again. It is feasible at this point that I could change to perforce, I am six months+ into a project but not really dependent on anything old in the version history. I could just leave the git repo alive for awhile after changing to perforce. It would be good to have all of the projects working files backed up by…
Thanks again! I have been using git with LFS to backup my unreal project. But I have never done versioning for art files like maya scenes and so on. So far, no disasters but I do feel like I ought to back up the maya files, especially those containing animations and rigs. Because these represent a lot of work and are the…
