Create your hairstyle as Fibermesh in Zbrush, export as curves via OBJ, import into Max (lines option needs to be checked in the import as I recall). Use the 3rd party 'Optimize_2' (sp?) modifier (from Scriptspot) on the resulting spline-cage to reduce the amount of CVs.
