The author calls this "half shapes", and it's a technique where you can get round movements even though blendshapes are linearly interpolated, like you noticed. Morph targets is an easy way to control eyelids. Left/right eye fully open/closed. Animating the verts directly is a thing of the distant past for this sort of thing. -

A joint placed at the center of a sphere will rotate around the surface. It pulls the eyelid in in an arc, not a straight line. I don't know if you're correct that the corrective blendshape peaks at half the value of the main though: if we're talking about two eyelids meeting in the middle, the horizontal rate of change will reduce to zero as the vertical transition…
