Was it invented for the movie Tangled, or did it exist in some form before that? That Disney doc I linked said Tangled but I am sure other companies had to have been working on PBR systems before that.
Well, invented is hard to say - bad choice of words - the guys that we in the games industry stole it from were the disney/pixar guys who did their work, so far as i know, based on the stuff these guys did: http://www.pbrt.org/ in 2004
Thats a fair point, but I dont think we should downplay the important of NPR rendering techniques either. and I will still say that PBR limits you in a heavy way to the kind of Disney/Pixar type of stylizisation which is only a small part of "stylized art".
