It would work a bit but then you get into pattern recognition. With a tablet, I can tap-tap-tap very fast and create these random shapes. I also do a bit of rotation if I find an edge on the star is too close to horizontal or vertical.
Nice tip, I'll give this a go soon! Have you ever tried this technique with a starshaped brush and the Clone Tool? Seems to me that would speed it up quite a bit.
