Is it possible to smooth by smoothing groups with the Opensubdiv modifier in 3ds max. I know the third party Turbosmooth_Pro modifier has this option. For OpenSubdiv you seem to have to use crease sets or the crease sets modifier which is cumbersome if you just want to smooth by smoothing groups. Using the Turbosmooth…
Thanks, but I know I can create creases based on smoothing groups. It's a step I don't want to have to take because every time I change the smoothing groups I have to recreate the creases.
I thought about your solution but, Turbosmooth by Smoothgroups will also smooth the mesh where the parts are one smoothgroup. In theory I could have a model with 3 smoothgroups, where most parts are being smoothed by the turbosmooth. You solution will only work in certain situations I think.
It seems to be possible with 3dsmax 3017 Update 1 now. But it seems that they are set automatically and not based on manual smoothing groups wich gives a lot more control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RpDvEncFus
Assign your smoothing groups, go to ribbon tools, selection, select hard edges, then set your crease value for selection. Start at a value of 1, checking for areas where you need more geometry and then lower the value to get the look you want. 0.3 crease value seems to be a good value for 5 iterations in the opensubdiv…
