[Maya 2016] component mode with marking menu selects objects
I dare you to solve this! When I hit F8 I enter component mode and can select components only as expected. BUT, when I enter component mode by way of the marking menu, I select components along with all other object in the selection marquee. This only happens on my home computer, not my work. I could copy my prefs but that… -

I'd try deleting the prefs file before a reinstall. -

This dropdown in the menu is at All Objects by default, I was able to get this by setting it to Polygons. But toggling with F8 resets it back to Objects, so I'm not sure what you've managed here. -

Try using 2017 instead of 2016 (or try at least 2016 ext1 sp1) - it doesn't have a complete selection implementation for Viewport 2.0. Selection in VP2 suffered from various problems for a long time. That was the first thing I tried. Something fishy is going on. If I can't solve this soon I'm going reinstall. So strange. -

Try this: in preferences/Selection make sure that "Ignore selection priority" is unchecked.
