No, you need a 16 bits source or you need to blur your alpha a little bit in Photoshop once converted to 16 bits to smooth the gradients.

I've converted the 8bits JPG to 16bits PNG, does't work... or converting is not the same as creating in 16 bits ?

You should make sure your height map is 16 bits if you want to get rid of the staircase patterns inside the larger brush.
