Actually you don't have to drop the tool, you just extend the edge, shift+click, extend, shift+click, etc. Shift+click will always apply the current tool without dropping it. It is just the Bevel tool (Chamfer in Max).
This is confusing BUT it's actually a feature. :) Right click the "Edge Extend" tool in the toolpipe window and make sure that "Select Through" is turned OFF. If it's off, you can shift click and move on both axis over and over again, just like Max.
