Hmm...I wasn't running the radiosity set up with a vertex paint modifier already on the mesh, but having tried that it still just results in an all black vertex color bake. I tried it with a couple of boxes and I'm getting the black with them as well so I wonder if there's something not right with the radiosity settings.
