i would definitely try to follow your geometry with the layout of the single rock elements and harden the segments. round rocks like this would only be seen as pebbles in a stream or around water but usually rocks are quite hard edged
coming along nicely so far! also good job on those rocks, very detailed. I like how you're retackling the scene with what you've learned, the blocky rocks are a step in the right direction. Maybe to make structures that large look believable, with that kind of shape, you could maybe draw inspiration with this kind of…
Going for an RPG feel. Got caught up playing some Wakfu in my down time over the summer. That game has some gorgeous art direction. So I have that kind of isometric view in mind. Made some progress on the rock formations tonight. Started out in Studio Max with some simple geometry then added some displacement to get it…
What art direciton are you going for? Because that looks extremely detailed for an isometric view of a rock. I can't make out the shapes your have in your original concept as well.
The rocks feel very blown out. Could use a lower value, but I'm thinking it's probably the strength of the light. I think the wood fence posts are reading a little too flat. They may look better with some more baked in lighting with the textures.
Worked on smoothing out lighting and textures on the spawn point. Pulled back on the blown out rocks while punching up the pedestal, walk way and fence. Also worked on learning a some c# to create an interactive camera in Unity. Check it out in the Unity web player. Crits \ Comments welcome!
Hey skodone! I had thought about closing up the gaps, but I think I'm happy with the layout so far. Thanks for the suggestion though. I brought one of the rock objects into 3D Coat and learned how to use those unwrapping tools. Tried texturing in 3D coat as well, but didn't end up liking how sometimes the brush would paint…
Thanks for the advice skodone! I'll remember that for when I get around to adding rivers and lakes. Did a couple more texture passes on the rock. My second attempt Started off hand painting then ended up using some photo manipulation. It looked better than my first attempt but I still wasn't thrilled with it. Went back for…
JadeEyePanda: I will look into evening out the lighting on the textures. Pull back on the Rocks a bit and punch it up on the fence, path and pedestal. I will also look into light baking as I have not dealt with this before. Starting an Inn following the Hero Spawn Point. Started off creating exterior brick wall tiles for…
