I'd actually say no to DigitalTutors and recommend 3Dmotive more because of the cost difference. Same sort of tutorials, same sort of handholding (which is VERY good in this case. Lord knows I wanted that when I was first learning). EDIT: That being said, pay for DigitalTutors when the need arises.
If catching up seems out of the realms of possibility i can tell you some students in my class who had barely touched 3d at all are all smashing out great up to date art. There's also a huge Udemy thread here on PC which cheap invaluable tutorials. and for $2.15 http://www.3dnice.net/game_weapon_dev.html is a fucking steal
If you're strapped for cash, get Vertex. Also, search boards on pinterest. There are a ton of great tutorial image breakdowns on there. It's hard to get back into it after being out for so long.
