No. You essentially pay only for updates. So pay 20$, cancel sub, pay again when interesting update come out. Sub is only for people who want access to Marketplace, bleeding edge source code, and ability to contribute to Epic code repository. -

I never heard of anyone OWNING Unreal engine... you licensed it per title. As far as Unity, you own a LICENSE of Unity, not the engine... and get updates through that X.X cycle, then pay to upgrade if your choose. I was using CryEngine, mainly only for environments and not an actual game. But with UE4 combined with the power of blueprint and access to the full source code, even with the crutch of baked lighting compared to real time lighting, I might just switch to Unreal all together and try and make something out of it. They made the Entire source code Available for free, Unity is now a big competitor, this way they get guaranteed money, and can support their business, 1 sale or multiple sales, its like micro transactions just for the engine, and also the asset store.
