Presentation does matter, but you can certainly be elegant without being heavy-handed. Pior's site is a great example. -

Love the honest feedback, guys. Now reading the links you guys posted. I think I'm guilty of 90% of the mistakes they outline. ya personally if i was tasked with reviewing portfolios, i just want a big list of images to scroll through, no dicking around having to click to thumbnails to get large versions of images, or navigating between images, just a list if images with the persons resume and details at the top of the page. and have it work with… -

So would these be examples of ideal websites http://www.3dkp.com/index.html http://www.pioroberson.com/ So I guess the biggest lesson here is to not impress them with your website functionality, but rather the content of your work.
