It's a limitation we have right now. Basically, what you paint on top of the generated mask is actually painted "behind" that mask. Not sure if this is 1.3.2 bug but i used to be able to change an effect properties but visualize the mask (alt click mask). Seems if i click on the generator now the mask disappears :(
Cool thank you guys, this is working for me now I was able to mask my layer with mask editor and the anchor. It would be very handy if the smart masks could be updated to support this feature since I had never used the mask editor before today.
