As you can see in the attached image, the cape consists of single sided geometry (Cinema 4D displays backfaces in a blueish tint and I didn't modify the geometry!) Thanks, polydon
The tails of the cloak weren't duplicated, they were both modeled separately... I just deleted object history, reset scale and transform, collapsed all modifiers and still doing the same thing. You are correct in assuming that the engine only uses the bones from their default position. This is because you are only adding a new weapon .smd and not updating the warlock.smd (this actually contains the overall skeletal rig).
