if your mesh isnt exported with its center at world center (0,0,0) then you have to use the local symmetry button. doesnt matter about the other subtools above or below. I always work with local symmetry on by default.
Hey, Thanks guys! Local Symmetry did the trick. What's the deal with the default symmetry? Why would it throw the little red dots so far away from my model? What's it basing its pivot on?
Local sym, check in max if the pivot is centred in the model, otherwise go Transform > Set Pivot. That should do it. If the model somehow becomes unsymmetrical you can use the Deformation sub palette (under tool palette) to fix small symmetry problems.
