If your goal is to just build levels, then it is NOT cheating to use premade assets that come with an engine, or from an asset store. It's the smart thing to do. My understanding of normal maps is you use them to convey detail when it would be to tri intensive to do by actually modelling the details in. This normally comes in the form of small surface details such as bolts, rivets, embossed patters, etc. It also depends on the look youre going for in the case of TF2 they use them… -

Yeah its hard to find accurate info on this panel. TFT is a generic word for flatscreen LCD. By all accounts it's a TN panel though, pretty much all other 4K IPS panels are either very expensive or limited to 30hz. This one does 60hz and even higher which is a dead giveaway for a TN panel. -

what you have is better, but yes, push it more. contrast and highlights. also your wood looks more like drift wood. less spidery vein looking wood grain and make it look more like it came from an actual tree. again, not sure if this is the style you're going for but just some thought. some tf2 stuff. -
