Autodesk software (such as max) is free for students :) You don't need to be a student of a university or anything - basically it's for non-commercial use. Just fyi. -

What about plugin compatibility? The old student vers needed spacific student versions of plugins to work, and most didnt have them. -

you can get a student version of max, maya and/or mudbox. you do not need a student email address (unless they have changed it recently). -

Rhino 3D is as easy as moi 3d but might have more features. It is very cheap for students and with student licence you can do commercial work as well -

it is really absurd for the college to ask their students to find out what the college should be teaching the students. it is their responsibility to know what to teach and how to prepare them for the industry. -

Are you sure its not because your friend might have been a student or something? I'm pretty sure that small indies that are not educational based and are not students do not apply.
