Unity has a free version. You just don't get some of the features, i'm not sure which. Appart from what mortalhuman said, and more from an artist standpoint, UDK is better if you want to pimp your stuff, but for that you have even better choices like cryengine2 or the 3point shader. Have never had any problems with gamma in 3d max. It does everything linear with gamma on automatically and not other way around Check if texture open dialogs are NOT set to gamma 1 and rather use picture own gamma or system default ( if input checkbox in gamma/lut tab is set to 2,2) Untill you are saving special textures… -

do that matte effect in the spec- some noise, in a subtle spec map does wonders, vs. that aggressive bump map like you have. Also I see your trying to do the worn edges thing, but I don't think your completely nailing all the components that make up the effect: It seems to me your taking an extremly aggressive noise…
