After looking at the example engraved text I'd say do it by hand (you can use path-deformed text copy as a placeholder and place the individual letters accordingly). -

heh, thanks dejawolf, works great now, but what if you want to have a background, for example, if you want to avoid a black border around your alpha, that is not possible? -

I could be talking out my arse to be honest, but for example in maya can you do stuff like strip modelling with the same ease as you can in max? -

I wouldn't link the pectoral into the deltoid, I would do it like in the second example in the link I showed you (bendy straw style). Deforms much nicer -
