For example use the remapHSV node. And use for max output a value higher than one. Use a simple geo first with a strong backlight. And turn on the IPR to see whats happening in the render.

Sorry I may have phrased that badly. I would in no way be making a carbon copy of freelancer. That would definitely be pointless! Totally agree with you, especially on the point of leading by example!
If you've got a gaming keyboard (for example logitech G11) you could assign a shortkey to press P then Z. Wouldn't be a great solution but would save you a buttonpress each time.
