I hoped beeing told that I'm overthinking:) I've read a long discussion in another forum about that and some people made their point that non planar polys could lead to shading errors similar like flickering in animations, when the direction of the normals is differently interpreted at different frames of the animation, or…
You are creating poles on control loop for the sake of a quadrangular topology, thats quite wrong cause it will most likely create some kind of shading error or noticeable pinching. Who cares how the wires look as long as the model subdivides and looks as intended? In a case like that piece I would do the following (as…
@mverta no problem dude. All it takes is practice. Make different models with interesting shapes, and tackle all the little errors that show up. @helinc IDK why that didn't work, that's weird. I see that you have a lot of supporting geometry for the hole which may be making problems for you since the surrounding geo is…
can anyone give a little advice with a curiousity i've been having. what would you do, how should the topology flow in order to get a clean set of ridges like these? i built the gun once already with god awful topology (ugly creasing errors galore) and now i'm going at it again with a few months of knowledge under my belt.…
Thanks for your answer. Yes, that's precisely the way I work. Maybe it appears that way because of the screen. Everything is actually symmetrical. Yep thanks good catch, had missed it - because in this case, it doesn't create a noticeable shading error. N-gons on flat surfaces are fine. I'm not sure what you meant by…
Hi! I've modeled this control panel piece that needed to have some specific button placement. I managed to achieve a working result without any noticeable shading errors at the distance/target we are aiming for, but, while it works, Im not happy at all with how the topology turned out and was wondering how to improve upon…
Hi Ghostscape! I sent the images like this to illustrate the 2 ways I tried to solve the problem and it's steps... I never thought they could be confusing but that was my error... when you're doing something you end up expecting that everyone else sees what you see... sorry! Thanks for your tips, they REALLy shed light…
This, this is what Perna preaches everytime. Why? Because when you learn using less control points, project after project. You'll get an eye of how much you need for the next project without trial and error! This saved me with a big project a couple of months ago and til' this day, i take pictures of hard surface things…
Problem with panels like this is that the cut is in the center of the quads, otherwise you could just place the corners closer to the support loops. You can try to move the egdes at the corner a bit closer and see if you can live with the bit of shading error. More geo works, though might be overkill in the end, depends…
Go back 3-5 pages, and I have a couple of explanations. Go back 5-10, and I have more of those, and if you keep on going back you will find between 40-50 (at least) reasons on why this error occurs. Sorry if I sound like an asshole, it's not meant to come out like that. But this is a problem that gets asked almost every…
