On your subdiv models, don't forget that in modo, the subdivision algorithm is different from 3ds Max/Maya/Xsi. A hole (cyl) from a box, is not so cylindrical in Max as example. 8 sides for cyls and holes are better than 4.
Although, to be honest, it's not that difficult to model it in either. You just need to start off with enough cylinder segments in your control mesh. Example: Not the cleanest of meshes but the end result is fine (and easily tweakable), and it only took 2 minutes to make.
@Filip5regular or not does not really matter @"Klaus Hustle" example can be adopted easily to your boats shape. in any case his topology is much cleaner and more easy to control while your´s already showing shading issues.
You need space between the parallel edges, I would rather just split the UVs than distort them. For example as marked red or green or a mix of both. Make sure the edges align exactly to avoid visible seams.
@sera3D May I ask why you need to model steps and walls into one continuous mesh? You don't need to take the support edges all the way through the flat surfaces, just terminate them. crude example
@wirrexx , thank you for taking the time to post that! Sorry I wasn't clear enough. The shape I was trying to do is the one you made in your third example, and to be honest I also used booleans and cleaned it up to make this. My question is, given that the horizontal cyl is beveling, I think it's impossible to have the…
Realized I should have posted an example with the fin closer to the edge, and with the skewed verts near the edge. I adjusted the height and position of just a few verts just to make the smoothing near the pinched edge look more uniform to the smoothing around the rest of the fin. When using this approach you want to tweak…
@VesaN This is what i do in most cases, quite simple!. Triangles are the key for me, and bevels on hard edges aswell. An example with high and low slope. We can use "quads only" if we want less polygons. Hope it helps!
1. MOAR GEO(overall and above the indent shape where the pole is) 2. try to get rid of the pole(if you don´t know how, i will give you a quick example) 3. dunno, the first suggestions should be enough ;)
One of most popular way to go (8side) Another way is less circular than, but more simple (if sometime you just need a really small hole), only use 4side poly. Extent it to more practical example: Hope it help.
