Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone. When I told him what everyone said he started on his second piece. He's mainly doing abstract stuff as his skills are still growing, but no knowledge of anatomy yet so no character sculpts yet.
my 2 cents is that you should learn your fundamentals...anatomy, color theory, design...etc If you dont have a solid foundation regaurdless of what style your shooting for, your going to struggle. Don't let your "stlye" be your crutch.
I think it might be a lot easier and efficient to get the kind of detail you are looking for by taking your model into ZBrush and then generating a normal map from your high res mesh. Studying anatomy like crazy will certainly help too  Keep at it
Hey man, keep up that clean style - it looks really nice. You should focus on anatomy studies, and still lifes to improve your values, try to show how different materials have different value curves and textures/edges Keep up :)
thanks! this will be painted over in color. my main concern right now is anatomy. i do the fine detail so i know what to leave out later. a method to my madness. i'm going to post progress. your input will always be appreciated.
Just start with the basics. Draw all the time and draw what you see; work on still lifes and master copies. For your figurative stuff, pick up some anatomy books and do studies until you feel comfortable drawing the human form. :)
After looking at most of the meshes I would have to agree with MOP and BoBo. A serious study of anatomy needs to happen here. Are image planes being used when modeling? They can be very useful. That way your ref material is on screen as you model.
Just make sure you keep that anatomy study in. Like you said, it’s not sexual and when I first saw it my first thought was that it’s beautifully executed. As far as layouts go I tend to favor vertical layouts for characters and horizontal layouts for environments.
Something about her proportions feels off, but I am not sure what. I think it might be her shoulders being to small, and her arms being to skinny? Maybe? Hopefully someone with more anatomy knowledge than I can weigh in here.
sltrOlsson may be onto something, there is something about the lips, I am not hot on anatomy but from a glance it isn't right, the ears may have lost some form inside, not much. The upper eyelids don't feel right. Other than that good woek :)
