I would probably use a trims texture to do this prop with a tiled map. Here's a quick cutup of you map for an example. It's mostly strips of different surface types that tile horizontally. good for something like this with a lot of long thin pieces of geo. Let me guess, you downloaded the files and imported the "weapon" mesh, but when you import the "weapon" slot, you get it like this? Notice the left hand is empty? Weapon mesh is actually offhand and vice-versa, Volvo messed up the files. -

Alpha handling in gimp is quite easy. First add the alpha channel as ZacD explained. Here you can although choose an existing alpha channel as alpha layer if you load an RGBA for example.
