That's interesting, I'll have to try that later. What I usually do is expose to the right and bring it back down in post..that usually takes care of 30-45% of noise in the midtones.
Been getting this error for a while now in the last few versions of Max. Similar to that solution, I usually add a mesh smooth modifier with 0 iterations which usually fixes it.
If this starts happening for me a lot I usually look for an update to the drivers or just re-installing the latest driver. It usually takes care of the problem for a while then it starts all over.
For the texture is ok I mean for the alpha , I usually have some problems for the alpha selections getting messed up usually and is especially valid for the intricate foliage alpha ...

I sometimes get errors like that, and I usually delete the contents of the SwarmCache folder in the UDK/binaries (I think) or delete the cache in the swarm coordinator window. That usually helped me.
Usually when it comes to anime style, the face is very flat. Not flat flat, but round flat ;P And the only thing protruding is the nose, usually in diamond shape with shorter bottom end.
No easy fix really. I usually just try not over extend them. If you create the rig with stretchy limbs, usually you don't notice the snapping as much, but it still happens.
