I personally deleted the normal smooth and replaced it with stronger. And if you use a tablet play with preferences>tablet Z intensity (go lower) will help you get ebven stronger results quicker.

Any tablet is going to be better than no tablet :) Not sure why you're not seeing the point count info, but that's pretty important to know. Maybe screen width is too small to see the whole UI?

I'd just like to add to this that if you're on a Mac and want to restart your tablet driver without rebooting you can find the PenTabletDriver.app or WacomTabletDriver.app under ~/Library/Application Support/Tablet/
Not the first time that UDK has had conflicts with tablet drivers (speed tree still needs me to change a altered DLL file every damn time as well or it crashes because of tablet drivers).

I think this could actually be a bit more fun on the pc. I played the demo with my tablet, and it was great! Although most games (well, fps') freak out with a tablet, this one worked wonderfully.
