I think your productivity with maya will increase over max when you sit down and learn the program. I think you're passing judgement to soon. Ofcourse you're not going to sit down and model right off the bat with maya. All the tools you need are in the "Create", "Polygons", and "Edit Polygons" menu. You dont have to worry… -

Looking nice Keen, but like the guys said you can still have varient looking sides, without having to create so many sides to the box. The way I do the boot isn't the most optimised since you end up with a lot of hidden polygons that are just wasted, but for the purpose of using it to bake maps to apply to realtime character models it works justs fine. A-Train, in UnrealEngine3 polygons with any type of alpha can have normals, specs etc along with shadows. Make sure u have the shader set to Translucent (if u want to have smooth alpha) and that your alpha channel (or image mask) is plugged into opacity slot. Sorry to bump this one back, but I'm also curious if there is such a plugin (highend3d didn't seem to have anything that did it). I have terrain I modelled, but I was asked to flatten a lot of parts because the programmers were having issues with gravity working - so now I have an excessive amount of triangles to cleanup… -

you can tell when you look at a model if its clean or messy. are there loads of verts not defining the form? are there bunched up areas of polys and other areas look blocky? very long and thin polygons? lots of polygons but still a blocky undefined shape? booleans are fine, but you need to clean them up afterwards- most of… -

Hmm, pretty cool! The grey metal doesn't seem shiny enough to be metal, it looks too flat at the moment - I guess you have a specular map judging by the bell, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything anywhere else.
