@Sharky 3dmotive is a subscription model, according to their site plans range from $17-$22/month. I think my tutorial would really open your eyes to how VFX Artists approach work and the principles of a good effect. I'll try to remember and send you a PM when they get it live on their site.
Thanks for reading @Ozz14 , I'm glad it's been useful for you. I found when I was trying to break into the industry that there was seldom a single place with lots of resources linked. It's not a particularly well mannered to answer the OP's question directly. Here's a pretty good average: http://www.polygon.com/2014/1/17/5318402/valve-paid-10-2m-to-dota-2-and-team-fortress-2-item-creators I made about 3x more on my TF2 contributions than the DOTA 2 ones.
17 textures doesn't seem that much, it probably has multiple materials; I expect it's fairly game-ready. It was a bit of a beast, but ran reasonably well.

If you look at all of Rare's titles throughout it's history, it was pumping out sports games, movie tie ins, game show adaptions, etc... it WAS a game factory. When you make so many games a few are bound to stand out. Acquired fairly early? Rare was 17 years old when Microsoft bought them.
