As explained in the "Surface-Based Asset Generation" thread the 'secret' for clean bevels/chamfers seem to be to inset each 'plane' of the mesh first. If we could get an 'Inset' modifier with a "by smoothing group" checkbox or if that is simply added to the chamfer/quad-chamfer modifiers we should be in the clear.
You really need to smooth out the the main forms (circle at top and base) as the silhouette is very jagged right now. The rectangular insets could perhaps use a bit more geo as well. Basically it was just carefully building the topology so that the edges followed the direction I wanted the raised or inset areas to appear.....then either insetting or extruding and re-enforcing the edges. Very time consuming but I think it works best…
it is most likely that the bevel fixed it because it insulates the awkward topology on the top surface from the 90 degree corners. you could probably achieve the same result by insetting all the top faces.
