Have you tried the Shortcut Override Toggle? If that doesn't work, delete the 3dsmax.ini...it is hidden somewhere in Application Data and is not deleted when un-/reinstalling Max.
But have you tried swap from Direct 3D to Open GL?I mean just to see so nothing has happen with direct 3d ?Also swap between DX8 and 9? This doesnt happen in any other applications?like games for an example? I also assume you have Servicepack 1 and 2 installed for 3ds max 9?…
I tried replicating your problem. In the 'Render Settings' dropdown, make sure it's set to whatever renderer you want to use (most likely 3dsmax.scanline.no.advanced) instead of being blank.
